May 10th: Sculptris Creature
For our last project you will create a creature in Sculptris. Here is a 3 part tutorial that will walk you through step-by-step:
April 25th:
Here is a great help entry on Adobe's site that shows how to type on path in very advanced ways:
April 23rd:
Make sure you post both your logo design (jpg), logo spray painted stencil photo, t-shirt design (jpg), and t-shirt stencil photo. The photos can be found on tabs here on the class blog labelled "Logo Stencil Work" and "Bleach Stencil Shirts."
Continue work on Text Portraits.
Logo Contest:
Here is a rough draft for a logo design for the Rocky Water Filtration group. They are applying for a grant from MIT to help solve a problem in a developing nation and they have chosen to address poor access to water. Create a logo in Illustrator that is based off of this:
April 9th: Text Portraits
You will create a self-portrait out of text based on a photograph you take of yourself or a family member. You may also use an image of an object (car, building, bowl of fruit, etc...) that you find on the internet as long as it is a creative commons licensed image with that allows derivations.
For more info on creative commons licenses scroll down to the bottom of this page: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/
Here is a link to the powerpoint that outlines the requirements and has some great examples:
Requirements:
Use a custom typeface
Include as much detail as possible
Cite your sources if you use a creative commons licensed image
Overlap text
Use a variety of size type
use a variety of color or value in your text
Here is a tutorial that will guide you through creating portraits from text:
March 18th: Bleach Stencil Shirts
Create a stencil of your chosing in Adobe Illustrator with the pen tool. Make sure to create bridges and islands as you did with the last stencil project. We will all get our stencils done and then get a little messy in another classroom as a group. Here is a cool example of one:
Here is a tutorial on the process:
February 8th: Design Dream Job
Sometimes as a graphic artist you may need to create images that are simply to pay your bills; still a really fun job! For this project imagine that you are a super hot shot graphic designer and you have just landed a contract to create a skateboard deck design for an awesome skate company, OR a concert gig poster for your favorite musical artist/band. Projects must be created in illustrator, though you can use reference images from the internet. Do not copy an existing design for a deck or poster. You must combine multiple images to create your project: don't just trace one image. Remember compositional rules! Both projects should include use of the gradient tool. Here is a new tutorial on how to use the gradient tool:
Include a custom font in your gig poster. Here is an example of how to do this:
Gig posters should be 11" x 17"
Gig posters should include informational text
Here are some cool examples of gig posters and skateboard deck designs:

Logo Spoof Stencil
For this project you will be required to research a corporation that may have caused some problems in society. Look at their corporate logo and think about ways that you could alter it to be a form of critique regarding the social issue they are connected with. Then create Photoshopped alteration of the logo. Next you need to bring your Photoshopped image into Illustrator and trace it with the pen tool. Be sure to include bridges and islands so the stencil works when you cut it out. Finally you will cut it out and spray paint through the stencil. Here is an example of the stencil created in illustrator:

Find a cool image off of the internet of a reasonably complex thing: an animal, car, house, person's face, etc... Then use the strategies learned in the Illustrator Practice Lesson (Violin) to complete the drawing over the top of your found image. This project should include much more detail and layers of color/value than the violin.
January 25th
Trace the violin image for practice. Follow the tutorial to learn how to use the pen tool:

Truth in Advertising
At this point you should be fairly well equipped to use many basic Photoshop techniques. This is a full blown project where you will now use your techniques to create a satirical piece of artwork. Advertisements are often very misleading. Study the examples below closely to get a good understanding of the project.
- Step 1: Find an advertisement image online that you would see in a magazine.
- Step 2: Download the image onto your desktop.
- Step 3: Create a visual analysis and description of how the advertisement uses imagery to convey meaning.
- Step 4: Create a Photoshopped spoof of the advertisement; show what the advertisement might be like if it were being truthful. keeping in mind our discussion on intellectual property, appropriation and plagiarism: you must change the image at least 50%. If you would like to use a camera to take pictures that is great.
- Make sure to use that refine edge tool with your selections!

Identity Self Portrait Project;
Compose 10 - 15 objects into a self portrait image. The objects should represent your interests. They should be cleanly cut out. The final image should be placed into a background that is a place that you identify with for some reason.
Here is an example artwork that I created:
